Jevon Carter, a point guard from Proviso East High School outside of Chicago, committed to play for the West Virginia Mountaineers Tuesday night as he became the first player to join the 2014 basketball recruiting class.

Carter made his visit to Morgantown two weeks ago where he took in the Mountaineer football team’s 24-17 victory over William & Mary and had a chance to meet his future teammates.

In his most recent season at Proviso East, the 6-1, 165 pound Carter led his team in scoring with 18 points per game to help his team finish fourth in the state of Illinois.

While the 18 points per game would be the obvious strength for Carter, the newly committed Mountaineer listed his defense, dribbling and passing ahead of his scoring ability on the court.

Carter won the 17 and Under National Championship this past summer as a member of the AAU basketball program, Next Level Performance, for the last four years.

Carter had standing offers from a multitude of teams including Illinois State, LaSalle, Valparaiso, Toledo, Akron and Indiana State before committing to West Virginia.
