So the Mountaineers have reached the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL to play the ACC Champion, the Clemson Tigers (or the “Clempsum Taterheads.”)

The Mountaineers attained a record of 9-3 and a share of the Big Least Championship, and due to the 3-way tie in the “conference”, the rules defer to the BCS rankings, and WVU had the highest BCS rank of Cincinnati and Loserville.

Meanwhile, Clemson found some magic this season due to, I don’t know, beating the always-overrated Virginia Tech twice in ACC play. Once during the regular season and again in the ACC Championship game. While Clemson got the ACC’s default BCS spot, Virginia Tech got lucky and landed in the Sugar Bowl, screwing Kansas State out of that game.

Anyway, like we’ve done all season, we the staff bring you our separate thoughts. While The Deuce is no longer a part of this site, he still took time out of his schedule to finish up the season with us. Also, I’d like to welcome Amy, Josh, and Tyler to the group preview. And, for the final game this season (and hopefully win #10, something the last coach couldn’t achieve), away we go!

Not many expected Clemson to be here. Actually no one did. Not even the fans. To understand Clemson and how they got here, you have to understand a little bit of the football program. Believe it or not, Clemson fans have a very high expectation of the football team. They expect a national title contender every year ala Alabama, Ohio St, Texas, and that whole bunch. State rival USC makes it a running joke that Clemson is still living in 1981. Thats of course the year Clemson won the National Championship. The Tigers have never sniffed a national championship since then. The Tigers have not been terrible during that time, just not championship calibur. They always seem to have the talent to make a national championship even playing in the ACC. Clemson has been able to recruit very well the last 10 or so years. But for whatever the reason, whether it be intangibles or having one more or so elite players Clemson has not reached a big time bowl….until now.

Last night was in 2 words, exhausting & exhilarating.

WVU, after being ahead for most of the game, blew their lead, and at one point was down by 7. However, the team put together some 4th quarter heroics that allowed Tyler Bitancurt (*gasp!*) to nail a 28 yard field goal with :03 to go in regulation, sealing WVU’s share of the Big East title.

WVU now awaits the fate of the Connecticut-Cincinnati game. Despite Cincinnati being out of BCS contention, this is their opportunity to keep their rivals (Louisville) out of the BCS. [Keg of Nails rivalry]

Now, follow me as we break down the numbers.

We had a chance to recently chat with Matt Staton of The Bull Rush, a USF fan blog. Last year, Matt wrote for Green, Gold & Bold, and answered our questions regarding Skip Holtz & USF. This year, he does the same for us. Here’s the first question.

1) After charging out to a 4-0 start which included beating Big East part-timer Notre Dame, the Bulls have really fallen to the bottom of the Big East standings. Obviously, lots of questions are being asked about the team this season. Care to sum up this collapse?

His answer to this question, along with the rest of them are after the jump.

The University of Louisville defeated a UCONN team that couldn’t catch a football today. What do these outcomes mean to WVU? There is now the potential for a three or four way tie for the Big East Championship and according to the tie-breaker scenerios, the Mountaineers last two games will be huge.

So, WVU marched into very cold and very snowy Piscataway, NJ to take on Rutgers on what is now known as the “Farewell, Big Least” tour.

First half was bloody atrocious. Questionable play calling (though I figure this was Coach Dana Holgorsen’s first snow rodeo) and a defense made of swiss cheese had WVU down 31-21 at halftime, and many WVU fans scratching their heads and shaking their heads in disgust. However, at the near-end of the first half, the refs obviously didn’t spot the ball when it was brutally obvious that WVU was in a “hurry-up” situation.

Second half, as has been the storyline most of the season, WVU emerged from the depths of a scoreboard deficit and went on to shutout Slutgers in the 2nd half, winning 41-31.

Last night’s game was nasty all around, let’s face it. Outcoached and physically outplayed on every side of the ball. The result? SYR- 49, WVU- 23.

For this game, I decided that the HailWV Team needed to do a “Brutally Honest Roundtable.” After the jump is when all the armchair and keyboard quarterbacking starts. Keep in mind that I may or may not agree with my writers views at times, but I asked them to be brutally honest (which is what we do here when needed… brutal honesty) and I will run their assessment, semi-unedited and uncensorsed.

So, the wise minds at ESPN decided to put a Big East game–wait a minute, put TWO Big East games on at the same time tonight on their dysfunctional family of networks. WVU visits Syracuse at the Dome, kickoff is 8pm on ESPN. Meanwhile, on ESPN2, Rutgers travels to Louisville. That game will kickoff at 8pm as well.

But, the battle of Slutgers and Loserville is not important to this site. The game on ESPN is more important, as WVU looks to avenge last year’s loss to Syracuse. Mind you, this was at Homecoming last year.
