After going up 3-0 in the 1st inning Saturday, the WVU baseball team couldn’t hold off the comeback of the regional host team.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons spread their scoring out, bringing in two in the 5th, one in the 7th and the winning run in the 9th. Although some could’ve done without the dramatics, it was quite the finish.

First baseman Gavin Sheets came to the plate in the bottom of the 9th inning for Wake Forest, having struck out twice in his three at-bats.

All he needed to do was drive in one run, with two unners on-base; the Deacons won on a one-out, walk-off single from Sheets.

This loss doesn’t end the Mountaineers season, but one more William do the trick. Sunday at noon, the Mountaineers will play Maryland again in a best-of-three series.

Maryland kept their season alive Saturday by defeating UMBC, 16-2. Quite a different outcome compared to the Terrapins showcase against the ‘Eers Friday when they only managed one run.
