No. 1: Special Teams

The Mountaineers special teams haven’t made any disastrous plays to hurt their team, but they haven’t been as helpful as their talent suggests, either. Wide receiver Gary Jennings has returned 17 punts for a measly 36 yards, while Shelton Gibson leads the team in kick return yards with 442. The offense hasn’t had to count on the kicking game too much, but a showdown in Austin against a gritty Longhorns team could be the game they’re challenged.

Mike Molina is 13 for 18 on the year on field goals, while punter Billy Kinney has flipped field position well with his 44 yards-per-punt average. Field position is always big against West Virginia because of their staunch defense, and this week will be much of the same.
