New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan has a great interest in his draft pick in Geno Smith at the QB position. However, after last season some of Smiths teammates have stated that the team lacked necessary leadership skills. Granted, moving to the Big 12 was a huge step that made the lives of WVU guys much more difficult due to much stiffer competition in universities like Oklahoma and Texas. Sure, everyone would have liked to have seen better results at the end of the season but Mountaineer fans are hopeful for the upcoming season and chalking last season up to an adjustment period.
While Geno Smith was not pointed out specifically by his former teammates in their statements, Rex Ryan said this past Monday
It tells me I’m glad my kid never went there, I can tell you that much.
Several players from last years team recently told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the Mountaineers’ 2012 team was “undermined by selfish players”. Junior running back Dustin Garrison went on record saying
Last year we didn’t have, you know, a lot of leadership
Then an even more hash quote came from Junior offensive lineman Quinton Spain when he said
What’s different this year is we’re more a team. There ain’t no I’s; we don’t depend on nobody. We just depend on all of us at once as a team. So I think this year will be better than last year. There wasn’t no team. I could say there was a team early, but once we started losing we saw the I’s come up, so it just hurt the team worse
Mountaineer fans have been pretty quiet since these remarks have been made in the recent past. Geno Smith has not yet commented on his former teammates statements and his new coach Rex Ryan on the New York Jets said
I guess that’s up to them. You have to ask them.
