Today, multiple sources are reporting that the San Francisco 49ers have agreed in principal to send quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a 2nd round pick (34th overall) and a conditional middle round pick.
The trade all but ends the speculation that Geno Smith will be selected with the first pick in April’s NFL Draft. With Alex Smith on the roster, the Chiefs will likely turn their eyes to drafting an elite left tackle such as Luke Joeckel with the top pick or, more likely, will trade back in the first round to attempt to recoup some draft picks from another team to replace the picks they are shipping to San Francisco.
With Kansas City out of the mix now, and with speculation that the Eagles and Cardinals will not draft a quarterback at the top of the draft, Geno Smith’s likely options are the Bills at #8 or the Jets at #9.
The reaction to the news of Alex Smith’s trade effecting Geno Smith are mixed:
Geno Smith breathes a sigh of relief upon hearing that Alex Smith is going to be the Chiefs new QB.

I hope the #Chiefs now re-sign Bowe & Albert, franchise Colquitt and draft Geno Smith #1 overall just to mess with everyone.

am I the only non-Chief fan thinking the Alex Smith trade is better than drafting Geno Smith

Alex Smith is now officially a Chief, most likely prolonging the drafting of Geno Smith to about 7 #Cardinals ?
