Tavon Austin received the #25 spot on the SI Big Board and is rated the #3 wide receiver prospect behind California’s Keenan Allen and Tennessee’s Cordarrelle Patterson.

Austin, at 5’9″ 175 lbs is certainly small by NFL standards and that point must raise a few concerns for prospective NFL teams. The NFL has been known lately for explosive small stature players such as Darren Sproles, Percy Harvin, and Wes Welker. Tavon Austin embodies all of the capabilities of Sproles, Harvin, and Welker in one electrifying package.

In his time at West Virginia, Austin clearly demonstrated his versatility, settting WVU record in kick return, punt return, receiving, and rushing categories. His high versatility and overly impressive ability to accelerate and shake defenders in open space will be a major draw for most NFL teams, making it highly probable that Austin will come off the board at the end of the first round or top of the second round.

The team most connected to Austin in draft rumors are the New England Patriots with the #29 pick. It is no secret that the Patriots have been looking at ways to replace Wes Welker this season, as evidence by the emergence of Julian Edelman. Tavon Austin, more than any other player in this draft, embodies all the talents that Welker possesses.

Expect Bill Belichick to take a chance on Austin with his first round pick in April.
