Happy New Year’s Eve and welcome to the final 2012 edition of Mountain Momma Monday. Once again, with the winter break in effect for West Virginia, the only women’s sports action was the basketball team. The swimming team will join the basketball team in competition this coming week with a swim meet in Miami, FL on January 3.
Until then, let’s catch up on what happened with the basketball team this past week.
The ladies hoopsters came away with a gritty home victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers this past Friday in Morgantown. WVU looked to be primed to walk away with a huge win, after ballooning their lead to 21 points in the second half. Appalachian State had other ideas.
Appy State closed the game to within one point with less than two minutes to play. WVU star Christal Caldwell sank a three pointer that helped to preserve a West Virginia victory.
Caldwell led the team with 22 points, a season high for the star junior. Averee Fields chipped in 18 points and 7 rebounds, matching Ayana Dunning’s 7 rebounds to lead WVU in rebounding.
The Mountaineers (8-3) will open Big XII play on Wednesday at Oklahoma. It will be a tough start to conference play for Mike Carey’s team. They will follow up their road opening conference game with a home game against Kansas on January 5.
Hopefully Mountaineers fans will fill in the Coliseum to support the ladies in their conference home opener.
