After some All-Big XII nods and snubs from media outlets like CBSSports, the Big XII conference released their official teams today. The awards were voted on by the Big XII coaches with each coach not allowed to vote for their own players. West Virginia was well represented on the 1st and 2nd team rosters.
Mountaineers earning 1st team All-Big XII:
- WR Tavon Austin
- WR Stedman Bailey
- KR/PR Tavon Austin
WVU representatives on the 2nd team All-Big XII:
- QB Geno Smith
- OL Joe Madsen
Tavon Austin also took home Big XII Co-Special Teams Player of the Year honors. He shares the honor with Oklahoma State K/P Quinn Sharp. Austin also received honorable mention for the Big XII Offensive Player of the Year.
Two other Mountaineers received honorable mentions. Ryan Nehlen was named honorable mention for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Freshman star safety Karl Joseph was given honorable All-Big XII mention.
West Virginia received about as many conference honors as could be expected from a 7-5 squad that under-performed their expectations. An argument can be made for Geno Smith being more deserving of 1st team honors than Colin Klein, but it is hard to have the Big XII’s lone Heisman finalist placed on the 2nd team.
West Virginia should have had a few more offensive lineman placed on the All-Big XII team based on how productive the Mountaineers offense has been this season. Seniors Jeff Braun and Josh Jenkins would be obvious choices to be honored, or at the very least, given honorable mention.
