College Football Award Semifinal Updates

To date, the National Collegiate Football Awards Association has announced semifinalists for six awards: Bednarik, Butkus, William V. Campbell, Maxwell, Davey O’Brien, and Jim Thorpe awards. Of the six semifinal lists released, the West Virginia Mountaineers have placed a player on three of the award lists.

Senior quarterback Geno Smith has been named a semifinalist on both the Maxwell and Davey O’Brien award lists. Smith has thrown for 2,417 yards and 26 touchdowns to lead the Mountaineers to 5-2 record.

Smith was named to the Davey O’Brien Semifinal list last week. The award is given annually to the best college quarterback. Smith was named to the 16 man list on October 22. Geno will find out if he made the final list on November 19.

Today, Geno Smith was also named as a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award. The award is given annually to the player judged by media and coaches to be the best player in college football. Smith was named one of the 16 semifinalists for this award. Again, Geno will have to wait until November 19 to see if he is a finalist for this award.
