The West Virginia Mountaineers face the 10th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles in the Coliseum tonight. The Mountaineers lost to Notre Dame on Wednesday, in embarrassing fashion, 71-44. West Virginia is now 17-11 overall and 7-8 in Big East play. Marquette is 23-5 and 12-3 in the Big East.
I think it is safe to say that the Mountaineers have entered desperation mode at this point in the season. They have won only 2 of their last 8 games. Kevin Jones continues to lead the team in rebounds and points per game. He averages 20.3 and 11.2, respectively. Truck Bryant averages 16.5 PPG. Jabarie Hinds and Gary Browne lead the team in assists. They combine for an average 6.4 per game. Deniz Kilicli is averaging 11.4 PPG and 5.4 RPG. Statistically, as a team, the Mountaineers are 80th in the nation in PPG averaging 72.3 and 111th in the nation in field goal percentage at 44.9%.
Marquette has won 12 of their last 13 games. Their only loss during that stretch came at the hands of Notre Dame on February 4th. The team is led by the senior duo of Darius Johnson-Odom and Jae Crowder. They combine for an average 35.8 PPG and 11 rebounds. Junior Cadougan and Vander Blue lead the Golden Eagles in assists combining for 8.7 a game. Marquette is 25th in the nation in PPG averaging 76.9 and 63rd in the nation in field goal percentage at 46.3%.
The game can be seen on ESPN and tips at 9:00.
