The Mountaineers took on the Syracuse Orange this afternoon in the Dome. The score will reflect that they lost 63-61. The truth is, we don’t know what the score would have been in the referees would have been doing their job.
The game was back and forth all afternoon. Syracuse was up 63-61 with 14 seconds left. Truck Bryant missed the 3 and West Virginia was able to rebound. Kilicli went for the layup. It didn’t go in, but there was a painfully obvious goaltending foul committed by Syracuse. It wasn’t called. WVU wasn’t able to make it fall again. The Mountaineers had the opportunity a second time, I understand that, but it shouldn’t have been needed. The game would have probably gone into overtime.
Now that I got that out of the way, there was a lot more effort and heart displayed by the Mountaineers on the court today. Kevin Jones had 20 points and 8 rebounds. Gary Browne and Truck Bryant combined for 23 points and 10 rebounds. The Mountaineers shot 40.7% from the field, 33.3% from 3-point range, and 73.3% from the free throw line.
The Orange were led Brandon Triche and Kris Joseph. They combined for 31 points and 7 rebounds. Syracuse was 46% from the field, 20% from 3-point range, and 76.5% from the free throw line.
The Mountaineers take on Pitt in the Coliseum on Monday.
