The West Virginia Men’s basketball team (13-5, 4-2 BE) is set take on the Marshall Thundering Herd (13-4, 4-0 C-USA) Wednesday night in the 40th installment of the Capital Classic. The Mountaineers lead the series 28-11 and will look for revenge from the 75-71 loss they suffered last year. The Thundering Herd will be looking to win back to back games for the first time in series history.
Kevin Jones continues to lead the Mountaineers in PPG with 20.1 He also leads the team in RPG and blocks with 11.36 and 1.1, respectively. Darryl “Truck” Bryant is the team’s second highest scoring leader with 17.8. Deniz Kilicli is averaging 11 PPG and 5.4 RPG. Jabarie Hinds and Gary Browne lead the team in assists.
As a whole, the Mountaineers are 51st in the nation in PPG, averaging 75.4 and 67th in nation in field goal percentage at 46.5%. West Virginia has struggled from the free throw line all season long. They are currently averaging 63.5% from the line.
The Marshall Thundering Herd is led by sophomore DeAndre Kain and senior Damier Pitts. They are scoring a combined 29.3 PPG. Junior Dennis Tinnon leads the team in RPG with 10.9.
The Thundering Herd is the 3rd best rebounding team in the country averaging 42.9 per game. They do, however, have a difficult time from the floor ranking 184th in the nation at 43.2%. They are 115th in the nation in PPG averaging 71.2.
The Mountaineers are the better team, but Marshall always comes to play West Virginia on the court. That being said, there is no way Marshall takes back to back wins this time around. The game tips at 7:30 and can be seen locally on the Capital Classic Network and on ESPN3.
