Mike Smith joins WVU football staff

So, it looks like WVU has brought on another defensive staffer tonight.

Mike Smith, formerly the New York Jets Linebackers coach, will be coaching Linebackers at WVU.

According to Bruce Feldman of CBSSports, West Virginia is going to hire New York Jets linebackers coach Mike Smith to coach the linebackers at WVU. Feldman first reported it on twitter:

“Jets LB coach Mike Smith will be hired at West Virginia as LB coach. Smith played at Texas Tech while Dana was there.”

Smith played linebacker with the Baltimore Ravens for a short period of time, being drafted in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Ravens. The former Texas Tech standout had an injury shortened career in the pros. He had multiple surgeries on his left shoulder and ended his career before the start of the 2008 season.

It’s widely known that Jets LB Aaron Maybin hugely credits Smith for reviving his career.

Welcome to WVU, Coach Smith!
