As I mentioned in a previous entry, I said that HailWV.com would not cover the WVU Baseball team until their coach, Greg Van Zant, resigned. Well, there are times when I have to go back on my word for the good of Mountaineer Athletics, and this is one of those occasions.
The WVU Baseball team has a chance to make the 8-team Big East Tournament. They need to win, and need Notre Dame to lose to #10 Louisville.
As of this writing, Villanova remains on top, 2-0, after six innings at Hawley Field. Jedd Gyorko, Grant Buckner and Dom Hayes with one hit each to lead WVU.
Today’s game will be the last at Hawley Field for Chris Enourato (who earned his 19th career win last night and went to 6-2 this year) and fellow senior pitchers Andy Altemus and Stephen Morrison.
The contest will also likely be the final game at Hawley for junior All-America shorstop Jedd Gyorko. Gyorko is expected to be among the top 50 picks during the baseball amateur draft in June.
While we’re talking about the baseball team, and for those that aren’t exactly involved with Mountaineer Athletics as a fan, there has recently been a group on Facebook calling for the resignation of WVU Baseball coach Greg Van Zant. I’ve heard from several former WVU baseball players the “Van Zant Tales,” and quite frankly, they are sad.
Having said that, LET’S GO MOUNTAINEERS!!
UPDATE: WVU catcher Kevin Griffin hit a 3-run walk-off homer run in the ninth inning with two outs to give WVU a 3-2 victory over Villanova.
UPDATE #2: This comes from the Twitter account of WDTV reporter and Mike Florio lackey Joe Brocato- Big East baseball: WVU beats ‘Nova 3-2, UL beats ND in Game 1 of DH. If ND loses Game 2, WVU clinches Big East Tourney berth and 8th seed.
UPDATE #3: This will be the final update. With Louisville defeating Notre Dame in a double-header 4-3 then 13-3, WVU qualifies for the #8 spot in the Big East Baseball Tournament. Congrats to the Mountaineers Baseball team for their accomplishment!
